New Xbox 360 Update Preview Program Begins, All Testers Will Get Free Halo: Reach Copy – Sign Up Now!

When Microsoft is getting ready to push a new Dashboard update out to our beloved Xbox 360s, the Redmond outfit likes to have a few guinea pigs. You know, a few people to test the new software out in the wild before we get our greasy mits on it. Today they launched a new preview program and you can sign up right now.

Before you all rush on over to the sign-up page, beware there are a couple of caveats: you need to be a US resident, and you need to have an Xbox 360 (well, duh!).

Microsoft mouth-piece Major Nelson also says being a paid Xbox Live Gold subscriber will help your cause too, so bear that in mind when signing up.

If you’re lucky enough to be one of the few thousand selected, you’ll not only get preview access to whatever shiny new changes Microsoft has in store for us, but you’ll also find a copy of Halo: Reach winging its way to your door. Not bad eh?

With +1, Google Search Goes Truly Social — As Do Google Ads

Back in early December of last year, we first reported that Google was toying around with the name “+1″ for an upcoming social product. At the time, we were told it was sort of like Google’s version of the “like” or “retweet” button. Today it officially launches as a way to share Google Search results that you like with your friends — and also Google Ads.

To be clear, the version of +1 which is beginning to roll out today is not the toolbar version that we first got a glimpse of in December, that’s apparently a different version that was being tested. This version of +1 actually launching is a small button that will reside next to each and every Google Search result. If you like the result, you click the +1 button and it gets shared with your social circle — and the public (more on that in a bit).

The button also works on the ads that appear in Google Search. If you like those and think they can be useful to friends, you can also hit the button there to highlight them. That may sound like something no one would ever do, but the implementation is actually pretty smart. You see, since the pages linked to in Google ads also appear in Google’s regular index, if that page as ever been +1′d as a regular result, it will also show up as +1′d in the ad.

But let’s take a step back for a second. Google +1 is an extension of what Google has been doing for a while with Social Search, Google’s Matt Cutts tells us. In their most recent update to that feature, results were surfaced and highlighted when someone in your social circle shared something on a social network, like Twitter or Buzz. “People really like this aspect of social search,” Cutts says.

At the same time, the current social mechanisms require some work to be useful — you have to explicitly share a link somewhere. You might not want to do that with every link you like. And that’s where the +1 button comes in, it’s a simple way to indicate you like a page and think it might be useful to others. Again, sort of like a “like” button.

Cutts wants to be very clear that this +1 data is public. While a big aspect of +1 is sharing results with your social graph, it is also about using that data in aggregate to highlight better results for everyone. For example, on a result that has been +1′d, you’ll see if any of your friends have +1′d it (in a similar way to the current Social Search look with people’s tiny profile icons under the result itself). But you’ll also see that X number of other people that aren’t in your social circle +1′d it as well.

This also ties directly into Google’s push to make all Google Profiles public. If you’ve upgraded to the new Google Profile, you will have a new +1 tab that will keep track of all the results you’ve clicked the button for. From here you can easily remove any result as well if you no longer want to publicly indicate that you like it. And when you’re adding +1 to your profile (it will be opt-in at first), you’ll notice that there’s a check box to opt-out of using your +1 information to “personalize content and ads across the web.”

The last bit is key there. Ads.

Again, you’ll be able to +1 any Google ad you see in results just as if it were a regular result. This is similar to the concept Digg has been using with Digg Ads (ads that you can digg), and sort of like the way you can retweet any Twitter Promoted tweet. Of course, it’s most like the way that you can “like” any ad on Facebook as well.

At the end of the day, that’s what this really all comes down to. Whether they’ll admit it or not, Google is at war with Facebook for control of the web. Facebook is coming at it from a social perspective, Google from a data perspective. But the two sides have been inching closer to one another. Facebook isn’t fully doing search — yet. But their social ad play is also a huge threat to Google. Probably even a bigger threat, since that’s the way Google makes the vast majority of their money. And +1 is a big attempt to keep pace with Facebook in that regard.

The key that Google isn’t really touting yet is that +1 data can be used to make ads social not just on Google Search result pages, but also across the whole web. If you have a site that runs AdSense ads, it may now feature +1 data in addition to the ad. And these newly social ads require no changes from advertisers, the bidding model doesn’t change at all and as a bonus +1 data will now be included in reports, Google’s Christian Oestlien says.

Guess who else would like to do the same thing with ads across the web given the social data that they have? Yep. Facebook.

At the same time, Google has had many failures in the social space. And they realized that with +1, they couldn’t afford to have some big hyped-up launch once again. So they’re taking it slow. There will be no +1 buttons for publishers at launch (but they’re coming). There will be no toolbar that spreads across other Google properties (that may be coming). There will be no mobile app or aspect (that it likely coming as well). The feature itself will roll out slowly and will at first be an opt-in one found in Google’s search experiments area.

But make no mistake, this is a massive Google project. And eventually it will hit all users — and not just those logged into their Google accounts. Down the line, Google can envision this +1 data influencing search results across the board, Cutts says. That’s what we call “downplaying” — assuming people use it, the social data is very likely to be the key ingredient to the future of Google Search.

Watch, Shoot, and Edit Videos with Vimeo's (New Free iPhone App)

The video-sharing website Vimeo has finally released an iPhone app (iTunes link). And it's totally worth the wait. The new app doesn't just allow you to watch videos on your iPhone and share them to various social networks, but lets you actually edit the video as well.

The app is well-designed and easy-to-use. It includes a video recording interface that should make your mobile videos better, letting you capture video with focus control and grid alignment. Then, once recorded, you can edit and trim your videos, adding transitions, titles, special effects and music. Finished videos can be uploaded to Vimeo from within the app as well.

You can upload in high- or low-resolution and - important if you're on 3G - you can pause those uploads and resume them when you're on WiFi.

In fact, you'll be able to accomplish pretty much everything that you'd do on the Vimeo website from the new app: watch videos, download videos, organize your collection, edit titles and tags, share, and view your stats on daily plays and feedback.

The app is free, and I'd say it rivals Apple's own iMovie app which will set you back $4.99. The app is compatible with the iPhone and iPad 2, but requires a free Vimeo account in order to upload your content to the site.

Guy builds Airplay 1080p

AirPlay, a technology from Apple for wireless streaming of media from iOS devices to the Apple TV, would be awesome if it wasn’t for one huge drawback: it’s only 720p. That didn’t stop enthusiasts Eric Govoruhk and Kelly McAteer to develop a full HD 1080p video mirroring for iPad 2 by using a wireless HDMI transmitter and a USB battery pack.

Check out the awesomeness in the above video. First OEM to do this gets a post here. Eric explained how they pulled it off over at the MacRumors forums:
Basically, we were tasked with the coming up with ideas that could help a client with their presentations. Sometimes they run Keynote Presentations on a Mac, and sometimes they run Keynote Presentations on an iPad using a VGA adapter. While I liked how mobile you could get doing it off an iPad, you’re still literally tethered by the cable running to the the A/V equipment. I knew there had to be some sort of solution, but sadly there wasn’t, at least not all in one place. So I started looking at combining different solutions, and luckily, not many were needed. The core components are the wireless HDMI transmitter, and a USB battery pack.
Oh, and of course the iPad 2.
Everything is very rough, especially the housing. This all came together very quickly, and we’re still working everything out. I just wanted to show you guys, because I know some of you are looking for similar solutions. I’m going to try and get an Instructable together once we get everything a little more finished. Maybe even try some other things, like a belt pack for those that don’t want the added bulk in their hands, or what ever other ideas our tiny little heads can think of.

Obama's got an iPad, and he tethers too !!

Despite calling Apple's iPad, among other modern-day entertainment gadgets, a conduit for distraction less than a year ago, U.S. President Barack Obama has been outed as an iPad owner himself.

As The Wall Street Journal reports, Obama detailed that fact during a town hall meeting with Spanish-language network Univision, which took place earlier today.

During an interview with Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, Obama said he does in fact have an iPad, and even tethers it to his high-security BlackBerry cell phone. Obama also noted that he owns his own computer, joking to Ramos and the audience about the idea of him having to borrow one from someone else:
Ramos: Not long ago I was having a conversation with my son. He's only 12 years old, and he couldn't believe that I grew up in a world where there were no cell phones, no Internet, no computers. (Laughter.) So do you have your BlackBerry with you, or do you have an iPhone? What do you have?
Obama: You know, I took my BlackBerry off for this show, because I didn't want it going off, and that would be really embarrassing. But usually I carry a BlackBerry around.
Ramos: Do you have an iPad?
Obama: I do have an iPad.
Ramos: Your own [a] computer?
Obama: I've got my own computer.
Ramos: Very well. (Laughter.)
Obama: I mean, Jorge, I'm the President of the United States. You think I've got a -- (laughter and applause) -- you think I've got to go borrow somebody's computer? (Laughter.) Hey, man, can I borrow your computer? (Laughter.) How about you? You've got one?
In a commencement speech to students of Hampton University last May, Obama admitted to not knowing how to work Apple's iPod or iPad, or Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation game consoles. Obama had also referred to the devices as turning information into a "distraction, a diversion," and "a form of entertainment" that kept people from empowering themselves.
The flip-flop on that particular topic is certainly a testament to the iPad being more than an entertainment device, even if that's what Obama is using his for. Perhaps we'll soon have a list of Obama's favorite apps if he's as happy to share them as he was with his NCAA basketball tournament picks.

Apple Patches iPad 2 Jailbreak Exploit by Comex !

Comex has just confirmed via a series of tweets that his userland jailbreak he already showed off few days ago has already been patched by Apple in the newly released iOS 4.3.1. Well, hackers lose the war against Apple again.

Comex on his Twitter account:
yeah, uh. I can find kernel exploits, but this is ridiculous.

As noticed by @0naj, my kernel exploit was fixed in 4.3.1.

I try not to be paranoid, but it is really hard to explain this as anything but a leak.

It stayed there from 4.0.2 through 4.3, but was magically found in time for 4.3.1. well, go go @MuscleNerd and @i0n1c I guess
Interestingly, and as Comex notes, "is that my "new" kernel exploit is actually the kernel exploit used by JailbreakMe 2.0. It was never properly fixed."

Now the only hope is from the iPhone hacker Stefan Esser who is the only one having untethered exploit right now which jailbreaks all iOS devices on iOS 4.3.1 except iPad 2. Yes, MuscleNerd and Stefan must find more exploits to jailbreak the iPad 2. [Twitter: 1,2,3,4]

iPhone 4 NCK unlock progress [Update]

It looks like the iPhone Dev-Team successfully dumped the seczone to do the brute force NCK cracking offline. It also looks like they were able to capture the official NCK key from their carrier which they needed to “decode” the encryption algorithms that are used to generate the NCK key. That way, in combination with the NORID and CHIPID (and likely some additional information from the baseband), they will be able to generate the the NCK for every unique device out there.

deviceKey = SHA1_hash(norID+chipID)
nckKey = custom_hash(norID, chipID, SHA1_hash(NCK), deviceKey)
(the nckKey is the key that eventually gives the seczone (and so the baseband) the unlocked state).
Right now they are brute force cracking the encryption, which is going to take a few days (if not weeks). If they succeed, progress may be made fast. In the meanwhile they are working on a software unlock. Please note that both are not said to success.

3. Now what? Should I sell my locked iPhone 4?
I’d wait for more information on this “NCK-unlock”. Right now it’s pretty vague what timeframe we’re talking about. If the Dev-Team can pull this method off, it’d be very promising for those waiting for an unlock. If this method turns out to be not doable, I’d consider selling your iPhone 4 and save up for a factory unlocked iPhone 5.

4. Do you think there is ever going to be an unlock?
Of course. But that’s unlikely to be any time soon (with soon being <1 month).

5. If the NCK method fails, how long do you think it will take for the Dev-Team to unlock the iPhone 4 softwarematically?
No ETA at all. Could be a few weeks, but it could easily be a few months as well. Hope this helps.

Apple uses stronger glass in iPad 2

If you were wondering just how strong the screen components are in the iPad 2, we now know thanks to some tests that the iPhone repair experts over at iFixYouri have done comparing the flexibility of the glass screen parts from both devices.

As has already been reported, the iPad's 2 screen (that includes the LCD) is thinner than the one found in the original iPad, which helped Apple make the iPad 2 lighter. Some wondered whether the thinner glass might be more fragile, but from this video, anyway, it appears the opposite is true.

Users report improved battery life with iOS 4.3.1

It’s no secret that iOS 4.3 hurt battery life for some iOS device users and with Apple issuing a bug fix-filled iOS update today, many have speculated that the release will include battery life improvements. Now that users have had some time to play around with iOS 4.3.1, readers have written in to report that their battery life issues appear to be resolved. One reader let us know that iOS 4.3.1 “significantly” improved his iPad 2′s battery life performance.

I have noticed significant improvement to my iPad 2′s battery life with the installation of iOS 4.3.1! I’m so relieved that the performance I was getting before isn’t its true capacity.
Others have expressed marginal to significant improvement in battery life through Twitter:

        * “iOS 4.3.1 was released today, seems like my battery isn’t dying as fast anymore.”
        * “4.3.1 update certainly did fix my battery drain issues.”
        * “Pleased that iOS 4.3.1 appears to have cleared the battery draining issue. Only gone down 15% in the last 6 hours.”
        * “Anyone else noticing significant battery life improvement on iOS 4.3.1 for iPhone 4?”
        * “My iphone is definitely draining battery slower under 4.3.1.”
        * “iOS 4.3.1 is out today, it seems to have fixed the battery issue on my iPhone 4.”

It appears that the battery life issue in iOS 4.3 is strictly software related. Perhaps the battery percentage meter is calibrated incorrectly in iOS 4.3 or maybe some background processess are unnecessarily activated. In any case, it appears that iOS 4.3.1 is improving battery life for some users. Did it help you? Let Us Know Please By Write a comment.

Steve Jobs To Tawkon: “No Interest” In Your Phone Radiation Measurement App

I see you driving ’round town with an app that measures cellular radiation, and I’m like, “no interest”.

Apple head honcho Steve Jobs has made it abundantly clear that Tawkon‘s phone radiation measurement application is not welcome on its official App Store, pushing the startup to make it available for free (for jailbroken iPhones) through Cydia instead.

Tawkon sent a courteous email to Jobs in the hopes of gaining approval for distribution of the application through Apple’s App Store, only to receive a characteristically curt response back:

Photo-Sharing Network Color Now Available for Android

Shortly after its initial launch on the iPhone, photo-sharing social network Color is now available for Android devices as well.

Well funded and ambitious , Color is already making big waves in the social networking world. Its premise is simple and could perhaps be described as “Twitter for photos,” but Color adds a little structure to the chaos: it knows your location and shows you pictures from people in your vicinity.

You can also share text and videos, but there’s a catch: everything on Color is public and visible to everyone. Sure, you won’t be sharing all of your private photos and videos on Color, but when you’re at a party, bar or an event, sharing some of the atmosphere with those nearby (and getting the same in return) sounds like a lot of fun.

Android users, have you tried out the app yet? Let us know what you think in the comments.

OS X 10.6.7 update causing problems with 3D acceleration for Quadro 4000 users

Users of NVIDIA's Quadro 4000 workstation graphics card may have a problem with 3D acceleration when updating to OS X 10.6.7. Apparently NVIDIA's display driver was incompatible with OS X 10.6.7 and during the installation process the updater simply removes it. Without having the right driver the system can't take advantage of all the Quadro's features, and you may end up wondering why some things aren't working.

The good news is that there's an easy fix. Earlier today NVIDIA released a new version of the driver and you're a quick update away from having everything running normally again.

There is also a report on the NVIDIA forums that suggests Mac OS X will not boot without having the updated driver installed. After speaking with NVIDIA, it seems that this is not the case and the post was inaccurate -- you shouldn't have any trouble booting after the update.

It is a nice reminder, however, to be careful when you're making changes to machines in a professional setting; it's always a best practice to avoid making any update to a production-critical Mac until the issues are sorted out (and, preferably, after you've tested the update on the lab bench instead of on the front lines). If you can't afford to have a system out of commission, don't hit that update button (a lesson I've learned the hard way).

Fix Mobile Substrate in Cydia After iOS 4.3 Jailbreak

Once a user jailbreaks the iOS 4.3, he manages to force the ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) feature which was implemented in the new iOS 4.3, to break the Mobile Substrate in Cydia, which is needed by many other tweaks and add-ons available in Cydia.
It is because of this update, that you will now be able to install and use all of the jailbroken apps and tweaks on the iOS 4.3 without any error or bug.

        What You Need:
        1. Jailbroken iOS device on iOS 4.3
        2. Basic knowledge of jailbreaking

        How to Recover iPhone Passcode

When you forget the password of your email, facebook or Twitter account you simply click "Forget my Password". But what about your iPhone? What if you set a ‘Restrictions Passcode’ a long time ago and now you can’t remember the digits?

You’ve got a couple of options. For starters, you could restore your iPhone as a new device through iTunes. You can’t restore from a previous backup, because your passcode is saved in that file

Your other option isn’t quite so painful. All you need is about 5 minutes and iPhone Backup Extractor for Mac OS X, which you can get here. This guide is specifically for Mac OS X users. But if you meet the criteria and could really use some help recovering your iPhone passcode, dig in!

Step 1: Once you’ve download the free app, iPhone Backup Extractor, open it up and let it extract itself. You will then want to click ‘Read Backups’. A list of your previous backups should now populate. Just select the backup that you want to extract the passcode from.

Step 2: You should now be looking at a list of apps that have been backed up. Scroll all the way to the bottom and click ‘iOS Files’, and then ‘Extract’. I recommend extracting it to your desktop so you can find it easily.

Step 3: Extraction will take a minute. Once completed, open the folder it created called ‘iOS Files’. Look for the file named ‘com.apple.springboard.plist’, and open it up.

Step 4: As you scroll down this list of properties, you should see a key titled ‘SBParentalControlsPin’ and to the right of it a value. This is what your Passcode is, enter it in your iDevice, and thank Simon Blog for sharing this little tidbit with us.

It is important to note that jailbroken users, can also locate their passcode via SSH Bellow. All you have to do is navigate to ‘var/mobile/Library/Preferences’.

        How to SSH iPhone:

Many users asked me about SSH, so I prepared this simple guide for them. At the begining What is SSH ? and why we do it?. SSH (Secure Shell) allows you to exchange data between two networked devices, using a secure channel. A jailbroken iPhone has the ability to connect with your computer via SSH, giving you read and write access to your iDevice’s hard drive.

Why we do SSH? You can repair damaged files, install games that aren’t in the App Store, and even turn your iDevice into a portable hard drive. I know it all sounds complicated, but we use applications to make the process as easy as browsing a folder on your computer. This is my quick and easy guide to SSH into your iPhone….

For beginners, your device MUST be jailbroken. You MUST also have an active Wi-Fi connection on both your iDevice and your computer.

Step 1: Download Cyberduck for Mac or for Windows.

Step 2: In your jailbroken iDevice, open ‘Cydia’ and do a search for ‘OpenSSH’. Go ahead and install it, and jump back on your computer.

Step 3: Open the Cyberduck application we downloaded earlier and click the ‘Open Connection’ button.

Step 4: In the server field you are going to type your iDevice’s IP address. This can be found by launching your ‘Settings’, selecting ‘Wi-Fi’, and selecting the blue arrow next to your wireless network. You should now see your IP address.

Step 5: Select the ‘SFTP’ option in the drop down menu above where you just typed in your IP address.

Step 6: In the Username field type in ‘root’. In the Password field type ‘alpine’. Click connect! You are now looking at the file system underneath Apple’s iOS!

Note: The first SSH may take a bit, after that it should be fine. If you get an ‘Unknown Host’ message, just ignore it and click ‘Allow’.
