Google TV Remote now available for iOS devices

If you happen to own a Google TV-branded product, the official remote app released last December on Android devices is now available free on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad running iOS 3 or higher.

Sporting a plethora of buttons, the program packs in channel surfing, DVR access, voice search and other features from the Android version minus the ability to push web pages from your iPhone to a Google TV device.

Foursquare 3.0 for Android and iOS set to launch tonight with host of new features

Via a blog post today, foursquare founder Dennis Crowley announced an updated version of his company’s software that will be available to users “late tonight.” Reminiscing about his company’s past, present, and future, Crowley admits that he and his team have not been able to “expand the foursquare experience as much as they hoped to” over the last year.

But that all changes today. Focusing on discovery, encouragement, and loyalty, foursquare will deploy several new features to its iPhone and Android applications (version number 3.0).

Through a new “Explore” tab, users can input what it is they are looking for, getting recommendations from 4sq based on what’s around and where friends have visited.

The company will try to encourage users to continue to explore their world with a revamped leader board. “You’ll see that we’ve replaced our old leader board (and its simple points system and Sunday night reset) with a sliding 7-day barometer of you and your friends,” writes Crowley. “Check-ins now trigger points for dozens of different types of actions.” Loyalty will be addressed by offering merchants additional ways to reward “swarms, groups of friends, regulars, newbies, or everyone.” Merchants will gain access to the new controls later this week.

In closing, Crowley writes, “we’ve got really ambitious plans for the rest of the year and we’re excited to let you play with three big new pieces of the master plan.” Foursquare notes that an updated BlackBerry client is due out later this week — though it will not include many 3.0′s features — and that it is “working hard” on its Windows Phone and Symbian apps.

What's so great about FreeSync? FreeSync provides a toggle in the Settings app and it also notifies you when it starts syncing. Once it ends the sync, it notifies you that it is finished.

New Version of TinyUmbrella will Allow You to Restore Your iOS Device without iTunes

Actually, it's not a new tool, it's the well-know must have tool, TinyUmbrella. Semaphore, the developer behind TinyUmbrella, has started a new post regarding that he is working on a new and improved version of TinyUmbrella that will allow you to restore your iOS device without iTunes.

From what's being said on his blog:

I've been working on a new and improved version of TinyUmbrella that will, among other things, allow you to restore your iDevice without iTunes. With the holiday season and work, this will take me a bit to get working the way I want it. I appreciate your patience and your support. You guys are awesome :) No ETAs yet but I'll post updates here and on twitter.

With this feature in TinyUmbrella, you won't need iTunes anymore and of course, this will bypass all errors while downgrading, updating, and may help with preserving the baseband. We'll post updates as they come, stay tuned !

Steve Wozniak: Android will be the Dominant Smartphone OS

Steve Wozniak, Apple's co-founder today said that the Android will be the dominant smartphone platform. Le's hope Steve Jobs won't kick his co-founder for this.

The guy revealed in an interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that Apple had co-developed a phone that was just amazing with “a well-known Japanese consumer electronics company in 2004″.

Wozniak said in the interview that he believes Google’s Android platform will become the dominant mobile OS over time, rather than Apple’s iPhone. He likens Android’s success to that of Microsoft’s Windows operating system, along with the flaws and challenges of that model

Other words has been said by Woz about the quality of the iPhone:
“The iPhone has very few weak points. There are no serious complaints or issues. When it comes to quality, the iPhone leads the way.”

At the end of the interview, Wozniak also commented on Nokia slamming it as a “brand from a previous generation”. He suggested Nokia should launch a new brand specifically for youngsters. [via Engadget]

How to Upgrade to iOS 4.2 NOW

So, iOS 4.2 GM was released today for developer and would be released for public in a few days but do you want really to get it now? We have good news, you can get your hands dirty now thanks to the powers of the internet. You do not need your UDID to execute the installation. It seems like you can't upgrade to iOS 4.2 using iTunes 10 so you may need to install iTunes 10.1 beta to commerce.

STEP 1: Download and install iTunes 10.1

STEP 2: Now, you need to download the right gold master version for your device:

• iPhone 4, get it from here.
• iPhone 3GS, download this.
• iPhone 3G, from here.
• iPod touch 4G, from here.
• iPod touch 3G, this one for you.
• iPod touch 2G, have fun with this one.
• iPad 3G and Wi-Fi, get this one, (The 2nd GM seed for iPad, from here)

STEP 3: Connect your iPhone into your computer via USB and iTunes hold Alt (Shift in Windows) and click on the 'restore' button then point it to one of the gold master files you download above. Wait for between 10 and 15 minutes for the new OS to be moved over.

Jailbreak iOS 4.2 GM on iPhone 4, iPod touch and iPad with Redsn0w

Few moments ago, Apple pushed iOS 4.2 Gold Master into Developers Center. The newly released Redsn0w 0.9.6 has been confirmed to jailbreak iOS 4.2 GM on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 4G / 3G / 2G and iPad. So, if you have got your copy of iOS 4.2 GM, you will be able to jailbreak it using the instructions posted below.

Today Apple released to developers the GM seed for 4.2. Tinkerers will find that yesterday’s redsn0w jailbreaks today’s 4.2 GM seed, simply by pointing redsn0w at the 4.1 IPSW (rather than the 4.2 one). Right now it mostly only makes sense for JB app developers to do that because many apps (including Cydia itself) need to be updated for 4.2. However, if all you want to do is enable afc2 (to use iFunBox or other file browsers), or to tweak settings like Battery % and Homescreen wallpapers, then go for it (if you have valid paid access to the GM seed). Be sure to uncheck the Cydia box, though! Ultrasn0w unlockers should stay very far away from this!!

STEP 1: Download iOS 4.1 (required for jailbreak) and iOS 4.2 then connect your iOS device into your computer via USB and make sure that iTunes is not running.

STEP 2: Launch Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 and click Browse then point it to iOS 4.1 original firmware file NOT iOS 4.2.

STEP 3: Now select “Install Cydia” and hit the Next button to continue the process.

STEP 4: A prompt will appear to put the device in DFU mode. For this just follow the instructions appearing on the screen or hold Home + Power buttons at the same time for exactly 10 seconds and then release the power button while continuing to press home.

STEP 5: Congrats, now you can enjoy your jailbroken device.

Forgot to talk about the unlock, currently, there's no unlock for the new basebands of iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2 but it's expected to be released just after the public release of iOS 4.2 in few days. We'll keep you updated whenever iOS 4.2 is available followed by Ultrasn0w unlock.

Apple Releases iOS 4.2 GM Seed for Developers

Apple has just pushed final Gold Master version of iOS 4.2 to developers. Only members registered in the iPhone Developer Standard or Enterprise Program. You can go download the GM seed now. Here's some of the new features in the iOS 4.2 GM version.

• AirPlay is back to Youtube
• Bug fixes makes it faster

The first beta was released on September 15th, followed by the second beta on September 29th, beta 3 on October 12th. iOS 4.2 should go public in days.

iPhone Alarm Bug DST Causing Problems Across Europe

Lots of bugs spreading this days! This one is about alarm, the alarm of your iPhone has caused some major problems across Europe countries. Most of the iPhone users are running 1 hour late to their offices due to this Bug. The bug basically is when daylight saving was started i.e when they have changed the time to 1 hour early, the iPhone's clock automatically adjust it to the time but unfortunately the Alarm Clock stayed at the same time. The result? Lots of people getting up an hour late.

This bug first targeted Australia then Europe and now New Zealand. People living in those places has suffered from this Bug. Apple fans in U.S wants apple to fix this bug before it hits U.S on 7th November. Well, this bug can also manually be fixed but for Apple it will be hard challenge to fix this bug. By the way, Apple has also another bug to fix right now which enables access to your contacts and make calls and bypass lock code. The solution that might work with you is to delete all the Alarms and start over again I think that might help. Let's see if Apple fixes it when North America makes the switch on November 7th. Apple is Hosting a Private Event for Selected iOS Developers Next Week?

According to a report from BusinessInsider indicating that Apple is hosting a private event for some selected iOS developers in California next week. It's still unclear who will be attending, how large the event will be, and what will be discussed.

The information is still few, but the rumors indicates that the conference will last for 3 days starting from next Tuesday. The original information came from an industry source (specially supplied by Apple). The report also suggests that they will help developers to improve the quality of iOS apps available in Apple's App Store. Whatever what will happen in this conference, it's made for improving iOS 4.2 in November and making it much better. So stay tuned as we will inform you about this surprise!

Chromium OS Running on iPad [Video]

We reported you yesterday about the the 17 years old hacker, who ported the Chromium OS on the iPad, we showed you only a screen-shot about that, today I brought you a video showing the Chromium OS running on iPad. It's not the best performance demo and is all too brief, but it does show touch sensitivity functioning.

For those of you who don't know this hacker, his name is Hexxeh, he has been playing around with Chromium OS builds for months. also he developed many builds since Chromium OS source was released, and Google itself acknowledged his work.

Here's What's New in iOS 4.2 Beta 2 For iPad [Full Coverage]

iOS 4.2 beta 1 was released on 15th September then following the traditional two week schedule, Apple released iOS 4.2 beta 2 last night to bring unexpected features to iPad. We are listing all the features with full details below.

New Multitasking Animation for iPad
That's the most important and big feature in this beta release, the arrival of real Multitasking to the iPad & different from iPhone's one. It's based on having your current screen slide to left, while the new one will slide around it horizontally to get on the front. Here's a video to see it in action [via MacStories]:

Game Center Indicator in the App Store
Apple added a new feature in this beta to indicate whether this game supports Game Center or not, this feature appeared in iTunes 10.0.1 app store and now it comes to the mobile app store for both iPhone & iPad [via iSpazio]

New Youtube Upload Options
By default, when you upload a Youtube video from your iPhone or iPad it goes public to everyone but iOS 4.2 beta 2 adds a new feature which allows you to choose one of three options when uploading a video [via 9to5mac]

New iTunes icon
You may hate the new iTunes icon but Jobs love it, so the old iTunes icon is now gone while promoting "Connect to iTunes", the new one replace it now.

Improvements & Optimizations
The recently released iOS 4.2 beta 2 apparently does much to improve memory usage, with some apps like Safari reportedly using nearly 25% less memory than in iOS 4.2 beta 1 [via iPadevice]

Internet Tethering on the iPad
We already talked about this feature hours ago, Internet Tethering option might allow you to tether your iPad 3G's internet connection to another devices as a laptop, so you will be able to share your iPad 3G connection with your laptop via USB cable.

Apple Posts New iOS 4.1 for Apple TV

We already told you that new Apple TV is based on iOS but here's a quick heads up which confirms that Apple TV runs iOS. Apple has just posted iOS 4.1 for Apple TV on their servers, I know it's not useful for you because you don't need to restore to it as it comes with it! But this is just a proof.

Newton OS Running on iPhone Thanks to Einstein Emulator [Video]

Forget iOS 4.2 and Android Froyo 2.2 on iPhone, Now it's time for Newton OS. This Monday morning, developer Matthias Melcher has wisely ported the forgotten operating system Newton OS onto iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. He's currently working on performance optimizations that'll hopefully have it running like a charm.

Einstein is an open-source project to run (via emulation) the Newton OS on modern hardware. It was written and released by Paul Guyot several years ago. It’s quite an amazing piece of work.

The project got a shot in the arm earlier this month when Matthias Melcher got it up and running on iOS and posted a video of himself running it on his iPhone. Being a Newton fan since my original MessagePad in 1993, it was quite a sight to see.

Matthias mentioned he didn’t have an iPad yet, so I grabbed the source and built it for my iPad so I could take a little movie and share

Even if the video embedded looks little slow and bad performance, but Melcher has mentioned that speed will improve as there are a lot of optimizations yet to be made. Check out the instructions posted here to get it running on your iOS device. [via PanicBlog]

New Apple TV is based on iOS and can be Jailbroken

Remember the iProd 2,1 reference that was found while testing iOS on iPad? We told you that it may be a next generation iPad with FaceTime or a new CDMA, but a new report brings new possibilities of this string. According to TUAW, it was a new iOS Based Apple TV. The key below was found while exploring iOS 4.2 beta that was released two days ago.

Of course, this $99.99 box may be a new jailbreak target, but to do what? to run apps on a limited storage? or will it do far greater things? [TUAW, via Engadget]

Some Developers are already Testing iOS 4.2 Beta for iPad?

Steve Jobs pointed to iOS 4.2 for iPad in November during his musical event. A few days ago Epic games updated their Epic Citadel with an interesting changelog including something we didn't expect. This game which is now available for everyone to download says “Fixed performance issues on iPad devices running iOS 4 or later” in it's changelog.

As usual, developers who have signed up to Apple’s iOS Developer Center can get early access to the upcoming iOS releases in order to allow them build applications to be available when the iOS goes public. iOS 4.2 beta is not available for developers yet but it seems like Apple have rolled out iPad 4.2 to few selected developers only. So at last we can say, iOS 4.2 for iPad release seems imminent.
